Owen Matthew has 8+ years of experience tutoring and working with students on their writing, the SAT/ACT, and organizational skills / homework support. Raised in England and educated at Johns Hopkins University, he graduated summa cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in International Relations and Creative Writing. From there, he moved to Los Angeles to embrace warmer weather and the beating heart of the arts.
His tutoring journey began in college, working with Baltimore schoolchildren to prepare them for the SAT and ACT. Over time, he expanded to tutoring across a wide array of AP subjects (AP Language, AP Literature, AP European History, AP US History, AP World History, AP Psychology, AP Government, AP Statistics, AP Biology, AP Chemistry, and AP Physics C: Mechanics), homework help and organizational skills, and (through the JHU Writing Center) specialized in writing assistance for essays, personal statements, and more.
Owen Matthew’s tutoring style focuses on mutual engagement, respect, and support. He emphasizes the need for students to not just be able to complete work, but to believe they can. He wants students to not only leave their sessions with new knowledge and skills, but also new confidence and a sincere belief that they can take on the challenges ahead of them, whether academic or personal.
In his free time, Owen Matthew can be found writing, performing at UCB and The Pack Theater, reading far (far) too many books, and rock climbing. He is available in-person or via Zoom.
